1. Al-Faatiha "The Opening" — Ayah 1
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Explanation

Surah Al-Fatihah, meaning "The Opener," is the first Surah of the Quran and holds immense significance, often referred to as *Umm Al-Kitab* (Mother of the Book) and *Umm Al-Qur'an* (Mother of the Qur'an) because it encapsulates the meanings of the entire Quran and initiates all prayers. This Makkan surah is also called *As-Salah* (The Prayer) because its recitation is essential for valid prayer, and *Ar-Ruqyah* (The Remedy) due to its healing properties, as evidenced by the Prophet's companions using it for healing.

The opening verse, "Bismillahi Ar-Rahmani Ar-Rahim" (In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful), is a foundational statement preceding almost every Surah of the Qur'an. While some scholars, particularly from Kufah, consider it the first ayah of Al-Fatihah, others view it as a separate verse introducing each surah. This phrase establishes the act of seeking blessings and assistance from Allah before any undertaking. *Ar-Rahman* denotes Allah's expansive, universal mercy bestowed upon all creation, while *Ar-Rahim* refers to His specific, enduring mercy for the believers. This distinction highlights the dual aspects of divine mercy: a general benevolence and a particular, continuous compassion. Its placement here underscores that all actions and recitations begin with acknowledging and invoking Allah's paramount attributes of mercy.
