1. Al-Faatiha "The Opening" — Ayah 1
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Explanation

This verse, "In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful," is the first *ayah* of Surah Al-Fatihah, which opens the Qur'an. Al-Fatihah, meaning "The Opener," is also known as *Umm Al-Kitab* (Mother of the Book) because it encapsulates the entire Qur'an's meanings and is essential for prayer. It was revealed in Makkah, establishing its foundational importance early in the prophetic mission.

Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir highlight its multiple names, such as *Al-Hamd* (Praise), *As-Salah* (Prayer), *Ash-Shifa'* (The Cure), and *Ar-Ruqyah* (Remedy), underscoring its comprehensive spiritual and practical benefits. The Prophet (PBUH) emphasized its significance, calling it "the greatest Surah in the Qur'an" and stating that Allah divides it between Himself and His servant during prayer.

The *Basmalah* itself, "Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem," is a declaration of seeking Allah's blessing and assistance before any action. It introduces two of Allah's fundamental attributes: *Ar-Rahman* (the Entirely Merciful), signifying His vast, encompassing mercy to all creation, and *Ar-Raheem* (the Especially Merciful), denoting His specific, continuous mercy bestowed upon believers. This opening establishes Allah's mercy as the overarching principle governing all existence and interaction. While some scholars consider it a separate *ayah* of Al-Fatihah, its inclusion sets a tone of divine compassion for the entire scripture.
